Autumn Equinox: Striking a Balance

The fall equinox occurs around September 22nd or 23rd each year, depending on where you are in the world. At this time, day and night are in perfect balance, each lasting roughly the same amount of time. A reminder that balance is essential in our lives as well.

All endings are also a beginning. The summer is coming to a close, but school doors are opening. Here in Southern California, people are trading in surfboards for pencils and notebooks, packing up the beach towels, and getting out sweaters.

I’ve been lucky to live in places where nature puts on an amazing show each fall—Washington, Utah, Connecticut. But here in my yard, my fig and pomegranate trees are still loaded with fruit. The deciduous trees turn a mucky brown before dropping their leaves. Still, there’s beauty in the garden that never sleeps.

This equinox encourages us to pause, take a deep breath, and appreciate what we keep. Just as the trees shed their leaves, letting go of what they no longer need, we too can shed what no longer serves us and appreciate all that’s left—the things that stay—the people who matter most.
